gay marriage

Steve Dekorte writes on his blog: “Gay couples allowed to marry in California. A bigger victory would have been converting all state marriages to private civil contracts and separating the state from marriage entirely, but this is at least a step forward.”

Finally someone who agrees. Why does the state play a role in deciding who should be allowed to share their life with who? Let people make their own private contracts if they wish, and treat them as individuals for the law, and we can stop talking about gay marriages or the marriage being the cornerstone of society, etc.

innocent

Last night I watched the movie Innocent by Simon Chung. These two reviews (1 & 2) give a much better description of the movie than I could do. The movie made a strange impact on me. The harsh environment of the main character is filmed extremely directly so the emotional impact of this movie is really strong, while at the same time this main character has a type of strong personality that really estranges him from me. Anyway, I’m not sure what to write about the movie, but I wanted to note it anyway.

queer as folk

One of my favorite television series is Queer As Folk (US) - I saw both the UK and the US version and like the latter better. I especially love one of the main characters, Brian, who is ruthlessly direct and honest and who tries never to talk as if he has a heart and to hide all the good deeds he does. He is kind of depicted as this egoistic bastard, but I think he’s the most admirable person in the series.

Anyway, not the reason for this post - was just wondering whether this equation might be the reason why the series stays exciting over five series.

bob & rose

I need a post on Bob & Rose. This is a British television series of six episodes, which is basically about a gay man, Bob, and a straight woman, Rose, falling in love, and about their, their friends’ and their families’ reactions. I am simply in love with the series and after watching every episode twice already, I still start laughing when I remember certain episodes. The series is very humorous, brilliantly acted, and very well fleshes out what really matters in life. I can try to give a nice description of the series, but the author, Russell T. Davies (of Queer As Folk fame), does it much better in his own words. And it was a relief to watch a series that is simply positive and where things end up going well. It really makes me happy to watch and the characters are written on purpose in such a way as to be very likable people, I think. So, check it out!

hedwig

Yesterday I watched the movie Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell. Totally brilliant! About a transvestite who flees from East Germany to the U.S. and starts a career as a (largely unknown) rock star. Totally bizarre story with brilliant music, very cool song texts, very artistic style of filming, very poetic moments and the story and main character is so bizarre, that all the actually very normal human emotions seem amplified.

The movie is totally different from Shortbus, the second movie by Mitchell, which I saw at the Dublin Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and which was the reason I checked out this one. Shortbus is about the sexual lives of two couples, a straight one and a gay one, and all their complications, centering around this sex club called Shortbus. Many people accuse Shortbus of being more porn than art, which is unfair, although it is extremely pornographic. But just like with Hedwig, the extremism of it, this time in its porn, seems to amplify what the movie is actually about, and so many of the things the main characters experience are so recognizable, and yet so rarely put in film.

So if you can handle very controversial and extremely explicit movies, both of those are highly, highly recommended!
